A vicious cycle: PTSD and heavy drinking among college students

A new study from the University at Buffalo funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse has revealed a two-way relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol consumption among college students. The researchers found that students with PTSD are more likely drink alcohol than their peers, and that heavy drinking can worsen those symptoms over time.

The study included nearly 500 students over the course of three years. It appeared in the latest issue of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, and was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
