Obama: Mental health just as important as physical

At a White House conference yesterday, President Barack Obama pushed for better access to mental health care and an end to the shame and stigma so often attached to mental illness, Reuters reports.

“‘We wouldn’t accept it if only 40 percent of Americans with cancers got treatment … So why should we accept it when it comes to mental health?'”

Obama pointed out that while approximately one in five children experience mental health issues, only about half receive treatment. He also acknowledged the high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries among U.S. veterans. The administration has scheduled mental health summits at the nation’s VA medical centers starting next month.
