SAMHSA on the promise of integrated health care

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has put together a nifty new graphic to show the potential of integrating primary and mental/behavioral health care.

More than one in five adults with mental illness also have a substance use disorder; nearly 70 percent of adults with mental illness also have one or more chronic physical conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

SAMHSA argues that the solution is integrated care –a collaborative effort between primary care and mental health and substance abuse services.
